Figen Mekik received bachelor’s (1991) and master’s (1994) degrees from Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. She earned her Ph.D. in geology in 1999 from Northern Illinois University. She is an invertebrate paleontologist, paleoceanographer, and paleoclimatologist. She has served AGU on a volunteer basis in many capacities including as secretary, vice president, and president of the Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology section. She is currently a full professor of geology and unit head of the Geology Department at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich.
