Biography

Kirk Martinez is a professor of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton, UK. He helped to design the next generation of imaging systems during 10 European projects and is co-inventor of the libVIPS image processing library, which is in use by millions of people on major websites. Kirk has over 20 years research experience with environmental sensor networks. This work has focused on sensing for glaciology and includes novel geophone and dGPS systems for measuring ice flow and the first sub-glacial wireless sensor probes. In the NERC Mountain Sensing project he deployed one of the first sensor networks based on new low power Internet standards. In the European Union SemsorGrid4Env project he helped to create the Semantic Sensor Network Ontology. He has published over 100 papers in electronics, computer science, and Earth science and has field experience in Norway, Svalbard, Greenland, and Iceland. Kirk was a founding member of AGU’s Earth and Space Science Informatics section and served on its executive board.
