Eric M. Riggs
Biography
Dr. Eric M. Riggs is the Dean of College of Natural Resources & Sciences at Humboldt State University. He was formerly a professor of geoscience education in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at Texas A&M University. The Riggs Group studies many related aspects of teaching, learning, and cognition in the geosciences. His research is in understanding how people learn and develop expertise in complex geological settings through the lens of embodied cognition, culture, and diversity. Recent work includes studies of academic field choice in geology as a function of gender, and the role of gendered experience in field-based learning environments and the resulting influence on career paths. Riggs also served as associate dean for diversity and climate in the College of Geosciences from 2011 until 2018; he was charged with taking direct action to improve the environment for an increasingly diverse population of faculty, students, and staff. He is a past president of the American Geosciences Institute (AGI) and the National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT). He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America (GSA) and is a professional member of GSA, NAGT, AGU, and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.
