Jian Lin

Jian Lin is a senior scientist and marine geophysicist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and was awarded the Henry Bigelow Chair for Excellence in Oceanography. He has conducted pioneering research on global ocean ridges and hot spot–ridge interaction, subduction plate tectonics, earthquake stress interaction, and tsunamis, through both seagoing experiments and computational geodynamics. Jian has served as chief scientist/co-chief scientist and geophysicist in more than 20 international research expeditions to study deep-ocean plate tectonic processes in the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans as well as marginal seas, collaborating with a large number of scientists and students globally. He is also known for research on earthquake stress interaction through studies of earthquakes in California, Japan, Chile, and global examples; one of his papers on earthquake research was recognized by the Essential Science Indicator (ESI) as the most cited earthquake paper in a decade. Jian served as a chair of the InterRidge International Science Program, coordinating and promoting collaborative research of deep-ocean geology-biology-hydrothermal processes of global mid-ocean ridges; member of the U.S. National Academy/National Research Council Committee on tsunami warning and preparedness; chair/co-chair and member of multiple AGU committees and advisory boards; member of National Science Foundation/U.S. Geological Survey/International Ocean Discovery Program and other science review panels; and editor/associate editor and editorial board member of multiple international scientific journals. He was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a Fellow of the Geological Society of America.
